How do we know whether the work is working?

Short answer

Before paid work begins, we agree on the baseline, the number that should move, the target, and the timeframe. Weekly updates show what changed; monthly reports show what moved and what we learned. If the number is not moving, you can stop paying after the written term. We would rather lose a retainer than defend one.
